Studio Radio Accessory Sources

Officers are required to provide their own equipment when working movie jobs.  This page is intended to provide officers with information about sources for accessories that will work with studio radios.  Please share your sources by emailing hal@pacificnet.net so they may be included here.

STUDIO RADIO ACCESSORIES:

The majority of motion picture and television production relies on two-way radios rented from various sound houses.  The sound houses use several models of Motorola radios.  Fortunately, the rental houses have found it to their advantage to use the various models of Motorola radios that all use the same accessory jacks, so the same hand microphones and headsets will work with most of these radios.

This links on this page provide information on the type of connector required, a motorcycle helmet headset system, a two-wire surveillance kit (very popular with many crew members), and the Motorola HMN9030A handheld speaker-microphone (used by many movie cops) that will work with that connector.

Finally, we take it a step further and provide information on frequency counters used to read the channel radio frequencies from studio radios (such as the Optoelectronics CD100 available locally at DXer Case located in Studio City), scanner radios (such as the Radio Shack Pro 96 which will also receive LAPD digital radio frequencies), and two-way programmable radios (such as the Vertex VX-7R) which can be used to identify the radio channels being used by the rental radios and monitor or talk to those radios.

Please submit suggestions and questions to Hal DeJong at hal@pacificnet.net.  They will be researched & posted here.
